Aviators Clinch Top Seed In Western Conference

In a packed-house at the Valley View Casino Center, the Bryan Brothers joined the San Diego Aviators for the first time this season. Dominating the Mylan World TeamTennis colored-court, the Aviators defeated the Springfield Lasers, 21-16. This defeat over Springfield and the Austin Aces victory over the Texas Wild, secured San Diego’s spot as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.  

The Aviators will host the Western Conference Finals, Thursday, July 24, at the Valley View Casino Center. Their opponent is yet to be determined.

In tonight’s match Springfield took an early lead, but the Aviators were able to come out on top, closing with the Bryan Brothers’ winning men’s doubles in a 5-0 shutout. 

“Springfield has been on a winning streak, but this win shows our team’s resilience. We were able to come back from behind and set it up for Mike and Bob to finish it up for us. We are excited to see which team we will be playing in the Finals,” said Aviators coach, Dave “Macca” Macpherson. 

In the first set, Aviators Somdev Devvarman was against Lasers Michael Russell. Russell, Mylan WTT’s men’s singles season leader, defeated Devvarman, 5-1, for an early Springfield lead. 

Next, in women’s doubles, Aviators Daniela Hantuchova and Kveta Peschke faced Lasers Abigail Spears and Olga Govortsova. In a close set, the Aviators came out on top winning the set, 5-3. Lasers still held the match lead at 8-6. 

In mixed doubles, Mike Bryan hit the colored-court for the first time this season with doubles partner, Kveta Peschke. This set, the Aviators were against Ross Hutchins and Abigail Spears of the Lasers. Springfield was able to tie the set at 4-4 forcing a Tiebreaker. In the nine-point-tiebreaker, the Aviators came out on top to win the set, 5-4, to trail the Lasers by one game, 12-11.

Daniela Hantuchova was able to put the Aviators in the lead for the first time in the match with her tenacity in women’s singles. Winning the set against Govortsova, 5-3, Hantuchova pushed the Aviators ahead 16-15, for the Bryan Brothers to hit the court for the final set. 

In their Aviators’ debut, Mike and Bob Bryan dominated the men’s doubles set against Hutchins and Russell. With the crowd on their feet, San Diego cheered the Bryans to a shutout victory against the Lasers, 5-0, to win the match 21-15. 

The next Aviators’ home match is Tuesday, July 22 vs. the Texas Wild, followed by Wednesday, July 23 vs. the Austin Aces. Tuesday and Wednesday’s matches will begin at 7 p.m.
